Făgăraș Citadel (Cetatea Făgărașului in Romanian) is one of the most important medieval fortresses in Transylvania and one of the best-preserved castles in Romania. Located in the center of Făgăraș, Brașov County, the fortress has a history of more than 600 years, serving both as a defensive stronghold and as a princely residence.

A short history
The first wooden fortifications were built here in the 12th century but were destroyed during the Mongol invasion of 1241. In 1310, construction of a stone fortress began, meant to defend Transylvania against external threats. Over the centuries, the citadel was expanded by rulers such as Ștefan Mailat and became the residence of Transylvanian princes during the 17th century. Later, under Habsburg rule, it was used as a military garrison and, during the communist period (1948–1960), as a prison.
Architecture
The fortress has a rectangular shape, surrounded by a defensive moat filled with water from the Olt River. It features massive walls, four corner bastions and the famous Red Tower, which offers panoramic views over the city.
Today – a museum and tourist attraction
Since the 1960s, Făgăraș Citadel has been restored and transformed into the Museum of Țara Făgărașului “Valer Literat”, with exhibitions of history, archaeology, medieval art and ethnography.
