Transylvania, located in the very heart of Romania, is one of Europe’s most fascinating regions. Surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains, it is a land where history, culture, legends and breathtaking landscapes come together in a unique way. Known worldwide for the myth of Dracula, Transylvania is much more than a Gothic fairytale – it is a place where medieval heritage meets vibrant modern life.
A land of history and diversity
Over the centuries, Transylvania has been shaped by many influences – Dacian and Roman, Hungarian and Saxon, Romanian and Austrian. Castles, fortified churches, and old towns still stand as witnesses of this rich history. In 1918, Transylvania officially became part of Romania, during the Great Union at Alba Iulia, a milestone in the country’s history.
Major cities of Transylvania
Cluj-Napoca – the cultural and university capital, famous for Untold Festival and TIFF (Transylvania International Film Festival), which attract visitors from all over the world.

- Brașov – a medieval jewel at the foot of the Carpathians, with the Black Church, Council Square and fortifications such as the White Tower.
- Sibiu – former European Capital of Culture (2007), home to the iconic Bridge of Lies, the Large Square and the International Theatre Festival (FITS).
- Oradea – Romania’s Art Nouveau capital, with elegant palaces and the restored Oradea Fortress.
- Timișoara – the “City of Freedom”, known for starting the 1989 Revolution and for its stunning architecture, also European Capital of Culture in 2023.

Bran Castle and the Dracula legend
Perhaps the most famous landmark in Transylvania, Bran Castle is often linked to the legend of Dracula. Built in the 14th century as a strategic fortress, it now attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists each year who come in search of history, myth and a touch of mystery.

Authentic Transylvania – the Land of Făgăraș
Beyond the big cities and tourist icons, Transylvania also hides regions of deep authenticity. One of them is Țara Făgărașului (the Land of Făgăraș), located at the foot of the highest mountains in Romania. Here, traditions are alive, villages keep their charm, and the imposing Făgăraș Fortress tells the story of a land once ruled by princes and voivodes.
A region to experience
Transylvania is more than just a place to visit – it’s an experience. From medieval fortresses and UNESCO-listed churches to modern festivals and breathtaking mountain roads like the Transfăgărășan, it offers something for every traveler.
